5 words to keep in mind when you’re struggling with perfectionism
#100HABITSIN100DAYS | DAY 6
Monday, 26 December 2022
One of the things that can keep us from doing our habits is perfectionism.
Some people describe perfectionism as being completely unsatisfied with anything less than perfect.
I think it’s not that black and white.
The way I see it, perfectionism is more about aiming to do or create things holding yourself and/ or your results to high standards and avoiding an activity if you(‘re afraid you) can’t live up to those standards.
For example, today it’s Second Christmas Day in the Netherlands – we Dutch people have this weird, but nice tradition of adding a ‘second day’ to festivities – and I’m feeling quite tired from Christmas dinner and all.
So, my first reaction is “Well, I might have to skip today’s challenge update, ’cause I’m not really sure I have the energy and focus to write a well thought out post.”
That’s perfectionism talking.
If I can’t do it well, I’m better off not doing it at all.
It’s not about trying to be perfect, I know my other updates are far from perfect, but it’s about this fear of not meeting my own standards.
The same can go for workouts.
You’re feeling tired, you know it’s probably not going to be a good workout. So you decide to skip it altogether.
When really, 99.99% of the time, we’re better off creating or doing something, even if the results are a bit less than normal.
When you keep your habit alive, it makes it that much easier to get back to it tomorrow.
The five words I try to keep in mind are: Done is better than perfect.
It takes practice to really act on them.
But once you can let go of the need to meet your high standards every single time, you experience a sense of freedom from being able to do things even when the circumstances are far less than ideal.
So, here is my one simple new habit recipe for today:
Done is better than perfect
Quality comes from repetition.
The more you do something, the better you get.
Next time, you feel tired or are strapped for time, try to do a mini version of your habit.
Or only focus on doing your habit, don’t put any pressure on doing it well.
Remind yourself, you’re building a new habit, and putting in the reps, and that in and of itself is progress.
Would love to here your thoughts on this challenge, I’m just one email away at info@mightyhabits.co.
